Terracotta provides software that delivers enterprise-class infrastructure services to applications transparently at runtime with minimal required application code changes.

Speaker: Jonas Bonér. Jonas Bonér is working at Terracotta Inc. with a focus on strategy, product development & architecture and technical evangelism. Prior to Terracotta, Jonas was a senior software engineer at the JRockit team at BEA Systems, where he was working on runtime tools, JVM support for AOP and technology evangelism. He is the founder of the AspectWerkz AOP framework and committer to the Eclipse AspectJ 5 project. Jonas is a frequent speaker on AOP and other emerging technologies (JavaOne, TheServerSide Symphosium, JAOO, Java Pro Live!, Javapolis, The Spring Experience, JavaZone, AOSD conferences etc.) and has written numerous articles on the subject.

When: 21.08.2007 19h - 21h

Bio: Mike Keith was the co-specification lead for EJB 3.0 (JSR 220) and a member of the Java EE 5 expert group (JSR 244). He co-authored the premier JPA reference book called Pro EJB 3: Java Persistence API and has over 15 years of teaching, research and development experience in object-oriented and distributed systems, specializing in object persistence. He is currently a Java and persistence architect for Oracle and is a popular speaker at numerous conferences and events around the world.

Abstract: Over the past year new Java specifications have been released to impel industry standards towards the current state-of-the-art. Of notable significance are the Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) 3.0 and the Java Persistence API (JPA), which define a significantly simplified model for business components and Java persistence, particularly when mapping entities to object-relational data models. These specifications break new ground in creating harmonious programming models that are both easy to use and sufficiently powerful to produce enterprise-grade applications.

This tutorial will introduce the concepts and principles of EJB 3.0 components, both from the developer and user perspectives. The use of annotation and XML metadata will be described and the notions of interception and dependency injection will be explained. The integration of EJB with the Java Persistence API will also be discussed, with an overview of the JPA programming model. JPA topics will include an overview of the operations on entities and the entity life cycle, object-relational mapping using metadata, static and dynamic queries, and JPA in a Java SE environment.

Ajax-Themenabend SOA bei Cola, Bier und Pizza!

Professor Arno Puder, State Universtity of San Francisco: Ajax-Framework XML11 (60 min.) - Deutsch
Abstract: The goal of XML11 is to help programmers write AJAX-applications without requiring any JavaScript knowledge. AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) has become very popular for building web applications. AJAX basically proposes to move part of the application to the browser without requiring a JRE-plugin. In order to do so the application needs to be written in JavaScript since JavaScript is the lowest common denominator across different web browsers in terms of prerequisites. Writing portable JavaScript is a daunting and tedious task. XML11 allows you to write your application in Java (not JavaScript!). XML11 then translates your Java application to JavaScript so that it can run inside any browser. Just like a C -compiler shields the programmer from the assembly language, XML11 shields the web-developer from the intrinsic complexities of writing cross-browser portable JavaScript code. As a consequence, a web-developer never has to write or even look at one line of JavaScript code.

Max Antoni: EvaServer - Ajax Advanced (60 min.) - Deutsch

Owen Taylor GigaSpaces.com: SOA: Scalable as Google, Simple as Spring (60 min.) - English
Abstract: SOA is widely adopted for easy integration, development flexibility and business agility. However, the inherent complexities and overheads in today’s common SOA platforms make the running of stateful business-critical applications seem impossible. In this session, we will demonstrate that SOA ceases to be an oxymoron to high performance when using simple and open, yet powerful technologies such as Spring and Space Based Architecture as the SOA execution environment. We will outline a clear road map for turning existing applications into linearly scalable architectures that scale on-demand over a pool of machines, using GigaSpaces.

On July, 3rd the IDE Shootout took place with official representatives of JetBrains, Oracle, Eclipse and NetBeans. The event was absolutely thrilling and the first one in the world hosting the four leading Java IDEs in one session with their official representatives! Beside that never before Eclipse joined one session or stage with competitors. This is a milestone for the whole Java movement!

Firstly I gave a welcome hinting to further events of the JUGC: in August e.g. two happenings: one session with an Ajax XML11 talk (Professor Arno Puder of State University of San Francisco) and Clustering (GigaSpaces) on August, 3rd, the latter provide pizza and free drinks including beer, and EJB/JPA with EJB 3 co-spec lead Mike Keith from Oracle, US, August, 21th — look for details published soon, dates are also shown in the right sidebar. I then explained the agenda and the rules: all IDEs had a speaking slot of 30 minutes — not more!! Looks very short having such big products on stage, but: on the one hand presenting four rivals in one session is difficult taking a different approach, on the other hand it is very interesting seeing the IDEs how they concentrate on their main assets (what they think are the main ones) and how they present their product in this time slot.

From left to right: Wayne Beaton (Eclipse Evangelist, Eclipse Foundation, Ottawa, Canada), Ann Oreshnikova (Marketing Director JetBrains, St. Petersburg), Michael Hüttermann (JUGC/host), Roman Strobl (NetBeans Evangelist, Sun Microsystems, Prague), Frank Nimphius (Principal Product Manager Oracle/JDeveloper, Germany), Maxim Shafirov (JetBrains, Responsible for IntelliJ IDEA, St. Petersburg), Mike Aizatsky (JetBrains, Responsible for Web Development IntelliJ IDEA, St. Petersburg).

Afterwards I thanked theserverside.com for sponsoring the event while providing soft drinks, beer and pizza. Fantastic: there have been four, five different beer types including Czech Pilsner Urquell and a pizza flatrate. The drinks were cooled with ice. I thanked TSS and its representative TSS editor Kirk Pepperdine. He did a great job in organizing this stuff: fresh supply of pizza and beer inclusively. Then the main actors were in the spotlight: I presented each one separat before the shootout began.

The starter was Mr. NetBeans Roman Strobl. He pointed out that NetBeans is not only an IDE but also a platform — a free one. He showed a nice NetBeans-based application called blueMarine. In the world map here he tried to find Cologne and was very successfully. Well prepared, dude. After that Roman presented Matisse, the outstanding NetBeans GUI builder, and analyzed a memory leak with the profiler. Which is very cool and can also work on artifacts not having as source code in workspace. The last main factor was the JRuby support. Roman filled the time well showing a hand of slides and diving into the IDE itself head-first. He worked with the recent NetBeans 6 build milestone 10. People were thrilled. He made a very good performance! Many people later told me that he was one of the best of the evening!

Wayne Beaton was the next presenter. Coming a few seconds late he missed the opening and the individual welcome, but nevertheless his appearance was a fantastic quick start: he also discussed Eclipse with some slides to start up his Ubuntu system and show the product work. Wayne pointed out that Eclipse is a big ecosystem with many contributors worldwide who helped bringing out Eclipse 3.3 recently — part of Eclipse Europa. He did a demo of Mylyn, formerly called Mylar, which connects ticketing systems like Bugzilla or Jira. Eclipse is an IDE not only a platform, providing a basic set of features. It is hard to compare products like Eclipse and e.g. NetBeans, JDeveloper or IDEA which have an out-of-the-box approach (although allowing adding plugins, too). I managed to organize a bunch of Eclipsemagazins from Software & Support Verlag to underline the Eclipse performance at this this point. Thanks to them! Roman was one of the first interested in having a look in the magazine. Always good for a joke, nice. Wayne did an excellent performance and showed that he is the one and only Eclipse evangelist not accidentally.

Frank Nimphius from Oracle was the third IDE geek in the row. Frank discussed Oracle’s tools, their full software lifecycle support and their strategy to contribute to Eclipse too but also providing their own product JDeveloper which is free to use since some time. JDeveloper supports e.g. visual JSF/JSP/Struts/Swing layout and page flow editors, declarative EJB and web services support, a powerful editor, a profiler as well as SOA and database tools. Frank showed building up an application with EJB 3.0 (look out for the August talk of the JUGC with EJB 3 co-spec lead Mike Keith), Ajax and ADF Faces Rich Client. The whole Application Development framework ADF is really unique. After finishing his demo application he deployed it on the OC4J server. Crossing-fingers was successfully: the application (which was pretty complex — not bad for such a time slot!!) went up after few seconds finishing his slot after exactly 30 minutes. Other participants had more or less difficulties with that, but after one, two hints having my golden watch in my hand, we got it .

Analyzing in a Biergarten … in front Kirk and Wayne, also visible Nikolai (a Java community guy), Mike and Markus (a Java expert and VI geek)

During this application start-up Frank prepared to throw some goodies into the people. Thrilling enough Frank needed two other guys to carry his give-aways from his car to the auditorium: Many different big boxes of bags including shirts and other stuff they transported with a pushcart. Don’t wanting to hurt anyone while throwing big packages he asked the audience to go to the boxes afterwards and take a bag with a shirt which fits to the individual size. Roman suggested helping out with some NetBeans shirts just to have something that could be thrown … and Frank gladly accepted the help. He took some NetBeans shirts and threw them. Belonging to a small group of international Oracle evangelists containing Duncan Mills and Shay Shmeltzer he is a really fantastic guy and an absolutely outstanding speaker and Oracle representative. Wow! Thanks to Torsten Winterberg from Opitz Consulting to connect me with him and recommending also integrating Oracle into the shootout. A very good idea!

IntelliJ IDEA closed the presenting slots with their talk: Ann introduced her leading IDEA technicals in a fantastic german. Who expected here speaking fluently german? The two guys, Mike talked, Maxim on the keyboard, a great work sharing, started their slot by explaining the benefits of IDEA from a more general view firstly: the support is always up and running. Also at the weekend guys work on your problems there giving help and direct feedback. Not only the high productivity working with IDEA but also the support, the fact that the JetBrains guys listen to the customers and the innovations justify that IDEA is commercial — also providing university and open-source project licenses.

They asked the audience who has contributed code to the Eclipse ecosystem like Eclipse Europa. No one in the audience rised his hands (being shy or not a contributor) and Mike tried to place a contra introduction to Wayne’s talk by that. Wayne was not so amused signals from out of the audience that we may all look on the Eclipse commiters and from where in the world they all come from. He stated Mike should stick to his product. The shootout accelerated !!! … and I was one step before taking out the yellow card I prepared and had with me. IDEA gave an overview of its way from 2000 and the first versions up to now. They have always been very innovative: Mike gave examples for each version where IDEA was the first mover by introducing new features to IDEs. Then they bring up the console and did some coding stuff, refactoring over different artifacts like JSP and Java artifacts. It was also possible to refactor code while there are still compiling errors. Thrilling! Having such a great support, this fantastic smart team where (nearly) all people develop code, being near at the customer and keeping up this innovative work helping people to work more productive … will also keep up their standing in the future. JetBrains was not only the biggest delegation, they also bring some nice stuff with them: beside some nice prospects also newly pressed IDEA 7M1 evaluation CDs, just pressed for the shootout having a nice shootout label on them.

At the end of the evening there was a panel discussion with all IDE guys. About one hour we talked and discussed and the protagonists answered the questions very open-minded. A bunch from questions came from Sun Java Champion Kirk Pepperdine e.g. concerning JSR 198, OSGi vs. JSR 277, OpenJDK vs. Harmony. Questions from the audience included DSL, scripting languages, GUI builders and their individual approaches. Finally there was a round-up where the audience gave feedback to the speakers and the whole session respectively the host and the IDEs themselves shared their thoughts too. The direct confrontation on this panel was very interesting. Many nice discussions arised and it was exciting to monitor the speakers themselves and the interactions between them.

Analyzing in a pub afterwards … f.l.t.r.: Ray, java geek, Roman, Mike, Markus, Kirk

After this official part, which was visited by about 70-80 people (not so many compared to former sessions of the JUGC), a delegation dived into the night-life of Cologne. 30 persons including the speakers went into a Biergarten drinking some Kölsch, Cocktails and other refreshments. It did not take long the first notebooks were openend to discuss further. After the Biergarten a group went further to another pub. There the group had some further fun discussing further aspects of the Java world like JavaFX. Roman, Ann, Mike, Maxim and Kirk belong to this group who switched out the lights in Cologne lately. I of course was also part of it, but I must, it is so hard to be the host.

The whole evening was very intimate and informative and simply thrilling. Having these guys (and the charming young lady) on stage in one session is something nobody managed before. Probably some bigger conferences will re-try to set something like that up and copy it. Such an event works and you can bring these IDEs together without needing a doctor in the audience if you have strict rules and a shared, commited agenda. Although they are competitors they are all working for the same target audience and share there efforts in shared projects, JSR and so on. Organizing this elephant conference was a tough work which took me some months. Especially bringing Eclipse on stage, too, was not so easy. After concentrating all efforts, contacting also Ralph Müller and Dr. Erich Gamma, I managed to bring the one Eclipse evangelist on stage I wanted since the start. Beside that, my original agendas were much more based on even more interactions and IDE confrontations but Eclipse refused to come having a real hardcore Shootout-agenda. To be asked what to do different next time is hard. All four parties discussed and commited the final agenda and I think it worked very good. Having more confrontations also has drawbacks — and such events should not promote any explicit loosers.

Being asked who was the winner I would respond the Java Community as a whole! It is great that the leading IDEs join one session and participate in one open discussion. The audience had the unique chance to ask questions and build up an own picture. So if you ask each individual visitor of Tuesday’s session you may get many different opinions who was the best performer or which IDE suits bests for a special task. The speakers explained and showed their products which are equal in many facetts but also have many differences and strengths. Beside that using an IDE is also some kind of emotional decision.

Thanks to the University of Cologne, Professor Dr. Speckenmeyer and team, for the great support and all other sponsors. Thanks to all participants to join this great show. Thanks to the speakers. Thanks to the audience for participating actively. Thanks to many old friends and new guests showing in for the first time. Part of the audience were e.g. Johannes Link (unit testing java geek), Lars Ködderitzsch (the man behind the Eclipse Checkstyle plugin recently honoured as a Eclipse community awards 2007 winner), Torsten Winterberg (SOA expert), Ray Hindman (SOA geek), Sun Java Champion Kirk Pepperdine (Java performance geek) who came from Hungary for the show and many, many others …
